So I don’t think there is any doubt that on Monday Facebook are going to make a massive update to their mail service and possibly roll out what some people are calling a Gmail killer. I always cringe a bit when I hear the “killer” word because it gets used way too often and it very rarely turns out to be killer but there is little doubt that Facebook are about to roll out something very major on Monday. Rather than being part of the huge launch of features in their Lockdown phase this seems to be something that Facebook have been planning for a very long time and has been code named “Project Titan” for as long as the last year. There is very little doubt than the Facebook mail or messaging service is poor and has been for some time now but the big question is where will this new product sit and just how far Facebook will push in to email territory and how social they will make their new product…
Is Email Broken?
People seem to obsessed with fixing email but is it really broken? Despite the rise of social media email is still the tool that most of us use on a daily basis to communicate and accomplish tasks. Having said that apart from the arrival of Gmail and some small improvements over the years email has largely stayed unchanged over the last 15 years. There was the attempt by Google to revolutionize email last year with Google Wave but we all know how that ended. Attaching files and sharing documents with people is till not the easiest process in the world and to a certain extent email feels like a clunky world with some serious limitations. Email is clearly not broken because over a billion people use it on a daily basis to get stuff done but there is no doubt that it needs improving and to date nobody has been able to manage that.
I Don’t Email My Facebook Friends
I generally don’t email the people I am friends with on Facebook. I do the odd time but for the most part I use email to accomplish work tasks or get things in my personal life done. Could I ever see a time when I tried to get actual work and tasks done through Facebook? I don’t think so, not in the next couple of years anyway. Having said that there is a whole generation of people who are coming through that find email alien. Younger people spend their time texting (usually for free) and using IM services or messaging each other through Facebook. You have to think it is this audience that Facebook are after, the people who have never relied on email and are happy using their social networks to communicate with others.
Where Do Microsoft And Drop.io Fit In?
So one of the main reasons for using email is to work or to share stuff. I’d be very surprised if people started using their @facebook.com email addresses for work purposes and Facebook has been very careful to stay out of the enterprise space up until now. Their recent acquisition of Drop.io and the fact that they have a very deep partnership with Microsoft (who are also an investor) is something to watch though. Could we see a day where you share large files and presentations via Facebook mail as well as collaborating on documents through the world’s biggest social network? I doubt it in the short term but as the platform grows who knows.
What Does Social Email Look Like?
Imagine a world where Facebook lives within your email. You could organize events with your friends, look at photos without having to attach them and start threads with people you know and trust. The big danger here is that it turns in to another Google Wave but the difference here is that Facebook will make it easier for the non techies to understand and the small issue of having 500 million users from day one. With over a years work and a huge understanding of how people interact socially you can be sure there is a bunch of stuff in the new release that us mere mortals will not have though about yet and that is what makes this announcement so exciting.
Facebook World Domination
Just where is this going to end? Anything that Facebook turn their hand to they can own these days given their sheer size and how important the platform is to everybody. They are the world’s biggest social network. World’s biggest photo site. World’s biggest events site. Soon they will be the world’s biggest local deals site (open to debate I know) and now they are trying to own email as well. Google have every right to be very worried at this stage. It is fascinating to see Facebook emerge from being a website and social network to this huge platform that switches on new features that have the ability to change whole industries. Expect the releases to keep coming and don’t be surprised if Facebook’s email product is one of the biggest in the world in a couple of year’s time and they start to dominate other markets with a particular focus on search and mobile. World domination beckons.
